Electronics Engineer

Purpose of the Electronics Engineer

The purpose of the Electronics Engineer is to be a key part of an electronics and software engineering team working on project delivery, service provision and product development. The job encompasses bidding for, designing, implementing, testing, acceptance and after-sales support of systems for the international Defence and Industrial market sectors. The work is within the context of a multi-disciplinary and multi-site engineering team delivering complete solutions to the customer.

Key Responsibilities

• Pre-Sales – You will work with the Business Development and Tendering teams to evaluate opportunities for product and project sales and to provide technical material in order to win sales.

• Engineering – You will work with other engineers to deliver projects, services and products to contracted cost, schedule and quality requirements. This role is responsible for the quality of technical solutions delivered by the engineering team, and is accountable for delivering work packages, such as detailed designs, implementations and test specifications, to agreed schedule and quality targets.

• After Sales – You will work with the Project Manager to provide an after-sales service to customers and clients. This role will engage with customers to diagnose technical issues with delivered solutions, and will propose technical solutions to those identified issues.

• Demonstrations – You will work with the Business Development team to prepare and deliver demonstrations of Company products and capabilities

Candidate requirements

Qualifications • A first degree or equivalent in a relevant Engineering, Electronics, Software or Computer Science subject. • Membership of a Professional Body, such as the BCS or IET is viewed favourably. Experience • At least 2 years of experience working on Engineering projects. • Experience of working both alone and in teams. General • Must meet UK MoD security vetting criteria. • Ability to work in the UK with no restrictions. • The job holder should have a current European driving licence. • Ability to be flexible and work outside core hours on occasion. • Participate in the personal performance review process, identifying development areas and strengths as part of continuous professional development. • Participate in continuous improvement activities within the company Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications: Mandatory requirements, the candidate must: • Be eligible for basic (SC) MOD security vetting • Be prepared to make (infrequent) short –term (overnight) visits within the UK to customer sites for meetings • Be prepared to make (more rarely annual) short-term (i.e. typical duration of a fortnight) visits outside of the UK to support customer programmes and installations • Have used schematic capture software and PCB layout software to prepare manufacturing data packs for sub-contractor manufacture of products. The ideal candidate shall be able to demonstrate competence in the following: • The implementation of designs in HDL for PLDs (ideally VHDL for FPGAs) • The design of circuits for data capture of analogue and digital signals and interfacing to microcontrollers • The design of DC power supplies and distribution for embedded electronics • Embedded system designs for the implementation of microprocessors or microcontrollers • Design competencies in each case shall include, component choice, schematic capture, PCB layout for performance and manufacturing considerations. It will be highly regarded where the candidate engineer can extend the company’s existing capability by having the following experience: • Designing embedded power supplies to meet the requirements of the LVD in static environments. Can demonstrate that they have designed ac power products that have met the associated international standards (IEC 60950, 60065, etc.) • Designing interfaces to instrumentation and sensors for data capture and processing • Designing and incorporating microcontrollers into embedded systems. Of particular interest is expertise implementing FPGA and ARM devices in high speed data processing and data transfer applications. • Implementing functionality in embedded firmware using C, C++ • Implementing interfaces such as CAN, USB and Ethernet in firmware and hardware. In addition the following attributes and experience will be viewed with favour: • Competence in the following development environment applications; CodeWarrior, Quartus, LabCentre Proteus (viz: ISIS and ARES) • Evidence demonstrating the ability to deliver designs incorporating low power RF devices into embedded applications (i.e. GPS, WiFi, Telephony, and similar) • Evidence demonstrating the ability to deliver designs achieving the requirements of Def-Stan 61-05, 59-411 Land Class A, (and/or USA, Aus-NZ, and French equivalents of) in, static, ground-mobile or sea-borne applications • Can use a HDL as a physical description/design tool for ASICs • Has participated in designs that have met European Rail applications • Has implemented designs for TEMPEST applications • Has undertaken designs that have successfully achieved strict safety requirements (nuclear, control, medical) and participated in designs to IEC 61508 or similar. • Has applied embedded power supplies in 12V and 24V automotive applications • Can communicate effectively in a leading European Language. (French, German, Spanish). • Will have designed circuits for high reliability (Class 2) products for the ground mobile, military, or industrial environments • Will have designed circuits and layouts for demanding EMC environments. • Is familiar with the design standards appropriate to meet both EU (CE and E marking) and USA release-to-market requirements • Have previously been engaged in designs which have been subject to configuration management. • Have previously been engaged by companies that were accredited to ISO 9000.
